Immigration reform is back in the news. Congress has been wrestling with whether and how to change the nation's immigration policy this year, and I think this would make a great topic for the 1000 word report I want you to knock out this class.

Specifically, I want you to select one of a variety of subjects that comprise the general topic so that collectively we can get an idea of the various aspects of the policy itself, the facts associated with immigration, and the political conflicts associated with the proposals working their way through Congress right now.

Here are some of the specific topics worth considering, but this is just a sampling of the various things that could be explored:

- What does the US Constitution say, and not say, about immigration?
- What was immigration policy during the colonial ear, and that of the early years of the US republic?
- What is the history of immigration policy in the US?
- What major pieces of legislation have shaped immigration policy in the US?
- What are the ongoing controversies regarding immigration in the US?
- What is the history of immigration policy in Texas?
- What various groups ally on different sides of the immigration debate?
- What legislative committees have jurisdiction over immigration policy?
- What executive agencies implement immigration policy?
- What are the major constitutional questions the Supreme Court has had to deal with concerning immigration?
- Why is immigration policy on the agenda right now?
- What are the major components of the current legislative proposals?
